ヴィトラ名 チャーチル
「ロメオ・イ・フリエタ」は、「ロミオとジュリエット」をスペイン語読みしたものです。
キューバの葉巻工場では、巻き職人たちが退屈しないように、職人たちの前で小説や新聞などを読み聴かせるレクトールという役割が古くからあります。そこで朗読される物語の中で特に人気のあったお話に由来してこのブランド名がつけられました。
「ロメオといえばチャーチル、チャーチルといえばロメオ」という言葉があるように、チャーチルは「ロメオ・イ・フリエタ」の代表とも言えるヴィトラです。チャーチルというのはこのサイズの葉巻の規格の名前(ヴィトラ)です。
この名は、葉巻をこよなく愛したことで知られる英国首相のウィンストン・チャーチルに由来しております。しかしながら、チャーチルがシガースモーカーの代名詞となっているため「ロメオ・イ・フリエタ」以外のブランドでもチャーチルの名を冠するものは多数あります。ただ、当時ウィンストン・チャーチルがロメオ・イ・フリエタのこのサイズばかりを好んで吸っていたことから名付けられた、本家チャーチルがこの1本です。
チャーチル首相は毎日朝から晩までずっと葉巻を咥えていたくらいの大の葉巻愛好家として知られており、キューバ革命でキューバに訪れた後、「キューバでは葉巻と昼寝の習慣を身に付けた」と言い残すほどです。
