ePowerは、2007年に設立された岐阜県に拠を構えるインポーターで、インディペンデントボトラーでもあります。
2017年に、ePower創立10周年を記念してリリースされたのが『秩父6年 IPAシングルカスク』です。
世界的に注目されているイチローズモルトを手掛けている秩父蒸留所の原酒で、2011年蒸留6年熟成のIPAカスクフィニッシュ。シングルカスクで249本限定として2017年にリリースされた、非常に貴重な一本です。
秩父蒸留所は肥土伊知郎氏により埼玉県秩父市に建てられ、2008年頃から操業開始しています。肥土伊知郎氏の実家が経営していた東亜酒造が経営難に陥ったことをきっかけに、大量に余っていた羽生蒸留所の原酒を守るために動き、株式会社ベンチャーウイスキーを立ち上げました。
秩父蒸留所ではアメリカンオークやフレンチオーク、ミズナラ樽に加えてワイン樽など多彩な熟成樽の使い方をする特徴があります。
インディアンペールエールと呼ばれるビールの製造に使われた、IPAカスクはウイスキーの熟成樽としては比較的マイナーながらも一部に根強いファンがいます。ホップのもつ香りや苦味が一般のビールよりも強いのが特徴で、その独特な味わいは、熟成したウイスキーに面白くも確かな影響を与えています。複雑で重厚、王道ではないが故、飲むことができる機会はそう多くはないはずです。ぜひこの機会に味わってみてください。

“Chichibu 6 years old IPA Single Cask” was released in 2017 to commemorate ePower’s 10th anniversary.
An unblended whisky from Chichibu Distillery, which produces Ichiro’s malt, which is attracting attention around the world, this IPA cask finish is distilled in 2011 and aged for 6 years. This is a very valuable bottle released in 2017 as a single cask and limited to 249 bottles.
Chichibu Distillery was built by Ichiro Akuto in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and began operations around 2008. When Toa Sake Brewery, which was run by Mr. Ichiro Akuto’s family, fell into financial difficulties, he set up Venture Whiskey Co., Ltd. in order to protect the large amount of unprocessed whisky from Hanyu Distillery that was left over.
Chichibu Distillery is unique in its use of a variety of aging casks, including American oak, French oak, Quercus oak casks, and wine casks.
IPA casks, which are used to make a beer called Indian Pale Ale, are relatively minor as whisky aging casks, but they have a strong fan following. It is characterized by a stronger hop aroma and bitterness than regular beer, and its unique taste has an interesting but definite influence on aged whisky. It’s complex and heavy, and it’s not a typical drink, so there won’t be many opportunities to drink it. Please take this opportunity to try it.
