ソブリン・ブランズ社は1999年にニューヨークで創業された家族経営の会社で、スパークリングワインやスピリッツの生産販売をしていました。
革新的なプロモーションを打ち出す事で全米から注目されていた同社ですが、2021年にペルノリカール社が少数株式を取得し、その後出資比率を大幅に増やし、2023年に『ザ・ディーコン』を発売するとともにウイスキー事業へと参入しました。
日本では、2024年4月に発売開始されました。
特徴的なスチームパンク調のPVと共に上陸してきたこのウイスキーは、目を惹く外観も相まって瞬く間に話題となったため、見たことがあるという方も多いのではないでしょうか。
他に類を見ない銅色のボトルは、ポットスチルをイメージしてガラスにメッキを施しています。
そして最も目を惹くのがラベルに描かれたスチームパンク調のペスト医師。ディーコンという名はスコットランド語で「熟達した名匠」といった意味を持っており、14世紀頃に猛威を振るっていたペストと戦ったペスト医師達をリスペクトした意匠となっています。
奇抜なのは見た目だけでなく、フレーバープロフィールも独特なものとなっています。
コンセプトは「スモーキーなのにフルーティー」。特徴的なピートが香るアイラモルトと、焚き火のようなスモーキーさのあるスペイサイドモルトの2つを主軸に立てて構成しています。
ピート香とスモーキーさに潮っぽさが相まって、炭火で焼いた肉料理のようにも感じられ、柑橘のフルーティーさも漂ってきます。

The Deacon is a blended whiskey created by global alcoholic beverage manufacturers and distributors Pernod Ricard and Sovereign Brands. While respecting tradition, the brand is not bound by fixed concepts like age or origin, and instead focuses on innovation to create new flavors.
Sovereign Brands is a family-run company founded in New York in 1999 that produces and sells sparkling wine and spirits.
The company attracted national attention for its innovative promotions, and in 2021 Pernod Ricard acquired a minority stake, subsequently significantly increasing its investment ratio and entering the whiskey business with the launch of The Deacon in 2023.
It was released in Japan in April 2024.
This whiskey, which arrived with a distinctive steampunk-style promotional video, quickly became a hot topic due to its eye-catching appearance, so many people may have seen it.
The unique copper-colored bottle features plated glass reminiscent of a pot still.
The most eye-catching feature is the steampunk-style plague doctor on the label. The name “Deacon” means “skilled master” in Scottish, and the design pays homage to the plague doctors who fought against the plague that raged around the 14th century.
It’s not just the appearance that’s unique; the flavor profile is also distinctive.
The concept is “smoky yet fruity.” It is composed primarily of Islay malt, with its distinctive peaty aroma, and Speyside malt, with its bonfire-like smokiness.
The peaty aroma and smokiness, combined with a salty hint, give it a taste reminiscent of charcoal-grilled meat, and there’s also a hint of citrus fruitiness.
The Deacon is a new-generation blended whisky that defies convention. We recommend it even to those unaccustomed to smoky whiskies.
