ロバート・サミュエルズ氏が、1780年頃に家業である農業のかたわらに自家用のウイスキーを作っていたことから歴史が始まるメーカーズマーク。時代が少し進み1840年に3代目であるテーラー・ウィリアム・サミュエルズ氏が本格的に蒸留所事業を開始、世界情勢に揉まれ何度も操業停止になりますが、滅ぶ事なく今や誰もが名を知るバーボンの代表格となりました。
その立役者が一族の6代目であるビル・サミュエルズ・シニア。
それまでとは違う、世界に広まるようなプレミアムバーボンを作りたいと考えたビル・シニアは、ケンタッキー州マリオン郡ロレットにあるスターヒルファームという農園を買い取り、そこにあった廃屋同然の蒸留所を改装します。
「機械任せの大量生産ではなく、出来る限り手作りしたい」という考えの元、170年続いた一族の秘伝のウイスキー造りのレシピを破棄し、1から再構築した結果今のメーカーズマークの特徴である冬小麦を使用したレシピが誕生しました。
冬小麦はライ麦や春小麦などと比べると、糖度が低いためまろやかでスムースな原酒が出来上がります。
また、メーカーズマークという名前と、トレードマークである手作業で施されている赤い封蝋もこの頃にビル・シニアの妻であるマージー・サミュエルズにより考案され、こうして今の形のメーカーズマークが1959年に誕生しました。
一族の蒸留所事業を立て直す偉業を成し遂げたビル・シニア。その後、息子のビル・サミュエルズ・ジュニアもまた一族の蒸留所事業に加わることになります。
「ブラックトップ」は、1995年から2004年にかけて限定発売されていたもので、1975年に7代目として蒸留所を受け継いだビル・ジュニアが、偉大な父が残した「レッドトップ」を越えるボトルを作りたいと考え、12年の歳月をかけて作り出したものです。
「レッドトップ」のソフトでさわやかな味わいを保ちつつ、更に芳醇でコクのある特別なメーカーズマークです。
アルコール度数も通常のレッドトップより少し高い47.5%となっています。
すでに終売済みで、2026年現在もうすでにビル・ジュニアはさらにその息子に最高執行責任者の座を渡しているため、再版されることも恐らく無いと思われます。

Maker’s Mark’s history began in 1780 when Robert Samuels started making whisky for his own use while farming. As time passed, in 1840, Taylor William Samuels, the third generation of the family, started the distillery business in earnest. The distillery was suspended several times due to the world situation, but it never went under and has become a representative bourbon that everyone knows today.
The driving force behind this was Bill Samuels Sr., the sixth generation of the family.
Bill Sr. wanted to make a premium bourbon that was different from the previous ones and would spread around the world, so he bought Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Marion County, Kentucky, and renovated the distillery there, which was practically abandoned.
Based on the idea of ”making it as handmade as possible, rather than relying on machines for mass production,” he discarded the family’s secret whisky-making recipe that had been passed down for 170 years and rebuilt it from scratch, which resulted in the creation of the recipe using winter wheat, which is a characteristic of Maker’s Mark today.
Compared to rye or spring wheat, winter wheat has a lower sugar content, which results in a mellow and smooth raw liquor.
The name Maker’s Mark and the trademark hand-applied red wax seal were also invented around this time by Bill Sr.’s wife, Margie Samuels, and thus the current form of Maker’s Mark was born in 1959.
Bill Sr. accomplished the great feat of rebuilding the family’s distillery business. Later, his son, Bill Samuels Jr., also joined the family distillery business.
“Black Top” was released in limited quantities from 1995 to 2004. Bill Jr., who took over the distillery as the seventh generation in 1975, spent 12 years creating it, wanting to create a bottle that surpassed his great father’s “Red Top.”
This is a special Maker’s Mark that maintains the soft and refreshing taste of “Red Top” while being even more mellow and full-bodied.
The alcohol content is 47.5%, which is a little higher than the regular Red Top.
It has already been discontinued, and as of 2026, Bill Jr. has already handed over the position of COO to his son, so it is unlikely to be re-released.
