厚岸蒸留所がプロデュースする2020年から始まった、季節の変わり目を表す言葉の「二十四節気」というシリーズの第21弾として2025年に数量限定でリリースされたシングルモルトウイスキー。
「小寒」の意味とは、冬の寒さが本格化する1月5日以降の時期のことを表しています。ボトルデザインにも雪景色を思わせる真っ白なラベルに、厳しい冬の中赤色の雄しべを咲かせ、春の訪れを告げているような丹頂草（タンチョウソウ）の花が描かれています。
厚岸ウイスキーは「スコットランドの伝統的な製法でアイラモルトのようなウイスキーが作りたい」という、蒸留所のコンセプトを元に2016年から蒸留を開始しました。使用されている蒸留器は、スコットランドにあるフォーサイス社製のものを取り寄せ、職人を日本に招いて蒸留所の設備を準備するほどアイラモルトへの強いこだわりが見受けられます。
蒸留所は、北海道内ではニッカウヰスキー・余市蒸留所に続いて2つ目となる北海道の厚岸町という牡蠣の名産地として有名な小さな港町に建てられました。
厚岸町周辺には、潮気を充分含んだ霧と清澄な風が吹き、そして豊富なピートを含んだ土壌を通過してきたホマカイ川の水があることにより、厚岸蒸留所が目指す最高のウイスキーを作り続けられる要因となっています。
小寒には北海道産ミズナラ樽をはじめバーボン樽、シェリー樽、赤ワイン樽の合計4種類の樽の原酒がブレンドされています。潮風を多く含んだ霧と共に熟成させた原酒は、深みのあるコクと甘味の中にほのかに感じる柑橘系を思わすキレ、更に厚岸ウイスキーの特徴でもあるスモーキーさが見事に調和しています。
アルコール度数55%と冬の寒さの厳しさを表現したかのような鋭さとそれに負けない力強く温かみのある味わい。ぜひお楽しみください。
This single malt whisky was released in limited quantities in 2025 as the 21st installment of the “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” series, produced by Akkeshi Distillery and launched in 2020, which uses terms to represent the changing seasons.
“Shokan” (Minor Cold) refers to the period from January 5th onwards, when the winter cold truly sets in. The bottle design features a pure white label reminiscent of a snowy landscape, and depicts the red stamens of the Japanese crested crested grass (Tanchosou), blooming amidst the harsh winter, as if announcing the arrival of spring.
Akkeshi Whisky began distillation in 2016 based on the distillery’s concept of “creating a whisky like Islay malt using traditional Scottish methods.” Their strong commitment to Islay malt is evident in their use of Forsyth’s stills from Scotland and their inviting craftsmen to Japan to prepare the distillery’s equipment.
The distillery is the second in Hokkaido, following Nikka Whisky’s Yoichi Distillery, and is located in Akkeshi, a small port town famous for its oysters.
The area around Akkeshi is blessed with a combination of sea-laden mist, clear breezes, and the water of the Homakai River, which has passed through soil rich in peat. These factors allow the Akkeshi Distillery to continue producing the finest whisky it strives for.
For the “Shokan” (Minor Cold) whisky, a blend of whiskies aged in four types of casks—Hokkaido-grown Mizunara oak, bourbon casks, sherry casks, and red wine casks—is used. The whisky, matured with the sea-breeze-laden mist, boasts a deep richness and sweetness, a subtle citrusy crispness, and the characteristic smokiness of Akkeshi whisky, all beautifully harmonized.
With an alcohol content of 55%, it has a sharpness that seems to express the harshness of winter’s cold, yet possesses a powerful and warm flavor that stands in its own right. Please enjoy.
