1843年に古いビール工場を改修して作られたグレンモーレンジ蒸留所は、最初のうちは経営が上手くいかず資金繰りに悩まされていました。
1887年にウイスキー用より安価で、ジンの蒸留に使われていた中古のポットスチルを購入したのが転機となりました。
このポットスチルで作られた原酒は、上品でフローラルな味わいがするということでたちまち大人気になっていきました。
また、グレンモーレンジは「樽のパイオニア」とも呼ばれており、スコッチウイスキーの熟成にバーボン樽を利用した世界初の蒸留所とされています。
数多くの限定品を世に送り出してきたグレンモーレンジ。
こちらは「バレルセレクトシリーズ」第三弾として、2023年の5月に少数のみ数量限定販売されました。
このシリーズは、ビル・ラムズデン博士が直々に希少な樽を一つ一つ厳選し、樽の風味を最大限活かすというコンセプトでリリースされています。
第三弾に使用する樽として選ばれたパロ・コルタドは、シェリー酒の一種でフィノやアモンティリャードを造る過程で何らかの原因により産膜酵母(フロール)が死滅することでオロロソシェリーとしての発酵が進んでしまい偶然誕生したとても希少な辛口シェリーです。
アモンティリャードとオロロソのどちらの特徴も持つパロ・コルタドシェリーの熟成樽に、バーボン樽で8年間熟成させた原酒を入れて更に4年の追熟を行いました。
エレガントでナッツのような風味を感じさせ、奥深い味わい。

The Glenmorangie Distillery, which was established in 1843 by renovating an old beer factory, was initially struggling with financial problems.
A turning point came in 1887 when he purchased a used pot still used for distilling gin, which was cheaper than distilling whisky.
The unblended whisky made in this pot still quickly became very popular due to its elegant and floral flavor.
Glenmorangie is also known as the “barrel pioneer” and is said to be the world’s first distillery to use bourbon barrels to age Scotch whisky.
Glenmorangie has released many limited edition products into the world.
This is the third installment of the “Barrel Select Series” and was sold in limited quantities in May 2023.
This series is released with the concept of carefully selecting each rare barrel one by one by Dr. Bill Ramsden and maximizing the flavor of the barrel.
Palo Cortado, the barrel chosen for the third batch, is a type of sherry. This is a very rare dry sherry that was accidentally created when the production yeast (flor) died for some reason during the process of making fino and amontillado, and fermentation as oloroso sherry progressed.
Palo Cortado Sherry aging barrels, which have the characteristics of both Amontillado and Oloroso, are filled with the original spirit that has been aged for 8 years in bourbon barrels, and then aged for an additional 4 years.
It has an elegant, nutty flavor and a deep flavor.
