『宝島』の著者ロバート・ルイス・スティーブソンに「酒の王様」と言わしめたタリスカーは、スコットランド北西、インナーヘブリティーズ諸島の最大の島、スカイ島で作られています。
スカイ島は海洋性気候のため非常に天候が変わりやすく、また濃霧に包まれることが多いため別名「ミスト・アイランド」と呼ばれています。冬になると海も荒れて、切り立った岩肌を大波が強く打ち付ける険しい環境です。
タリスカーはこのスカイ島の厳しくも美しい自然によって育まれ、スカイ島を体現したウイスキーとして世界中で愛されています。
タリスカー蒸留所は1830年にマカスキル兄弟によって創立されました。 マカスキル兄弟の本業は羊飼いでしたが、当時のスコットランドでは農業の副業としてウイスキーの蒸留をすることはさして珍しいことではなく、スカイ島でも7箇所の免許を持つ蒸留所と数十ヶ所に及ぶ無免許の蒸留所があったそうです。
時代が流れほとんどの蒸留所が閉鎖に追い込まれる中、タリスカー蒸留所は近年までスカイ島唯一の蒸留所として生き残りました。
多くの蒸留所がそうであるように、タリスカー蒸留所も幾度か所有者が入れ替わり現在はディアジオ社が所有しています。
ディアジオスペシャルリリースは、ディアジオ社が所有する蒸留所の希少な原酒を、年に一度数量限定でボトリングしてリリースするシリーズです。
タリスカー11年はこのシリーズの『語られざる伝説』第二幕として、日本では2023年8月に発売されました。
スカイ島の入り江、ロッホ・ハーポートの海が激しく荒れた時、深海から光り輝く生物が現れたという伝説にちなんでラベルにクラゲの絵が描かれています。

Talisker, which Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, called the “king of alcohol,” is made on the Isle of Skye, the largest island in the Inner Hebrides, northwest of Scotland.
Due to its maritime climate, the Isle of Skye has a very changeable climate and is often shrouded in thick fog, earning it the nickname “Mist Island.” In winter, the sea becomes rough, and the environment is rugged, with large waves hitting the steep rocks.
Talisker is nurtured by the harsh yet beautiful nature of the Isle of Skye and is loved around the world as a whiskey that embodies the Isle of Skye.
Talisker Distillery was founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers. Although the MacAskill brothers’ main occupation was shepherding, it was not uncommon in Scotland at the time to distill whiskey as a side job to farming. On the Isle of Skye, there were seven licensed distilleries and dozens of unlicensed distilleries.
As time passed and most distilleries were forced to close, Talisker Distillery remained the only distillery on the Isle of Skye until recently.
Like many distilleries, Talisker Distillery has changed hands several times and is currently owned by Diageo.
Diageo Special Release is a series in which rare spirits from distilleries owned by Diageo are bottled and released in limited quantities once a year.
Talisker 11 was released in Japan in August 2023 as the second act of “The Untold Legend” of this series.
A picture of a jellyfish is drawn on the label, a nod to the legend that when the sea at Loch Harport, a cove on the Isle of Skye, became violently rough, a glowing creature appeared from the depths.
The aging barrels are American oak first fill and refill, and wine seasoning barrels, giving you a warm spiciness with the sea breeze.
