当時ウイスキーの熟成には海外から輸入したシェリー樽等を使用していましたが、終戦後の様々な規制が絡み、海外から樽を輸入することが難しくなってしまいます。
そこで何とか代用できる木材がないかと職人達が探しまわり、たどり着いたのが東北地方や北海道に分布するミズナラでした。
ミズナラは高級家具などに使われることが多いですが、水漏れがしやすく加工も難しいため樽材には適さないとされる木材でした。
それでも何とか樽として完成させ、いざ熟成させてみると今度は木の香りが強すぎるという問題に直面してしまいます。
しかし、そこで諦めずに辛抱強く熟成を何度か重ねていくと、白檀や伽羅のようなオリエンタルな香りが顔を見せるようになることを発見しました。
職人たちの粘り強い創意工夫が引き寄せた奇跡です。
今となってはミズナラ樽はジャパニーズウイスキーの象徴とも言える存在になり、世界中に注目されるようになりました。

Yamazaki is now popular all over the world and can be said to be the representative of Japanese whisky. Founded by Suntory in 1923 as Japan’s first whisky distillery.
At the time, sherry casks imported from overseas were used to age whisky, but various regulations after the end of the war made it difficult to import casks from overseas.
So the craftsmen searched for an alternative wood and came across Mizunara, which grows wild in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido.
Mizunara is often used for high-end furniture, but it is considered unsuitable for casks because it is prone to leaking and difficult to process.
Nevertheless, they managed to complete the cask, and when they started aging, they faced the problem that the wood’s scent was too strong.
However, they did not give up and continued aging several times, and discovered that an oriental scent like sandalwood and agarwood began to emerge.
It was a miracle brought about by the craftsmen’s persistent ingenuity.
Mizunara casks have now become a symbol of Japanese whisky and attract attention from all over the world.
This single malt is made using only raw liquor carefully selected from these precious Mizunara casks that has been aged for more than 18 years, and a small amount of raw liquor that has been aged for more than 50 years.
The oriental aroma unique to Mizunara casks is intricately intertwined with the mellow aroma, making this a masterpiece that can truly be called the pinnacle of Mizunara casks.
