スコットランド最北部、オークニー諸島のメインランドに位置するスキャパ蒸留所は1885年に創業された歴史ある蒸留所です。
当時ほとんどの蒸留所の動力は水車や石炭を使っていたのに対して、スキャパ蒸留所はいち早く蒸気機関を導入するなど、かなり先進的なスタイルを取ることで注目を浴びていた蒸留所でした。
何度か蒸留所オーナーが入れ替わっていますが、1980年代初頭に導入されたローモンドスチルが今もなおスキャパ蒸留所のアイデンティティとして活躍しています。
ローモンドスチルとは、ポットスチルの胴体から伸びるネックの部分が円筒状になっており、単式蒸留器と連続式蒸留器の中間のような見た目をした個性的な蒸留器です。当初バランタインの技術者が、一つの蒸留器で多彩なモルト原酒を作れるようにするために開発されたものです。
スキャパ蒸留所では、このローモンドスチルを初留に使ってスキャパ特有の優雅でフルーティーな味わいを作り出しています。
かつては年数表記のあるボトルもリリースしていましたが、2015年に「スキャパ16年」が終売。その後継としてリリースされたノンピートの「スキャパ スキレン」と同時に、当初イギリス国内向けとしてリリースされたのがこちらの「スキャパ グランサ」です。
グランサは、原材料となるモルト自体はノンピートですが、バーボン樽で熟成をしたあとエクストラピーテッドウイスキー樽で追熟することによりピーティーなフレーバーを出しています。
フルーティーでエレガントな甘みと、ヘザーハニーを思わせる香りに少しだけスモーキーさが顔を覗かせる優美な味わいです。ぜひ一度お試しください。
Located on the mainland of the Orkney Islands in the far north of Scotland, Scapa Distillery is a historic distillery founded in 1885.
At the time, most distilleries were powered by waterwheels and coal, but Scapa was one of the first to introduce steam engines and attracted attention for its rather advanced style.
Although the distillery has changed owners several times, the Lomond still introduced in the early 1980s still serves as the identity of Scapa Distillery.
A Lomond still is a unique still with a cylindrical neck extending from the body of a pot still, and looks like a cross between a single still and a continuous still. It was originally developed by Ballantine’s engineers to enable the production of a variety of malt spirits using a single still.
At Scapa Distillery, this Lomond still is used for the first distillation to create the elegant and fruity taste that is unique to Scapa.
They used to release bottles with age labels, but in 2015, “Scapa Aged 16 years” was discontinued. Its successor, the non-peated “Scapa Skillen,” was released at the same time as “Scapa Glansa,” which was initially released for the UK market.
Although the malt used to make Glansa is non-peated, it is aged in bourbon barrels and then further aged in extra-peated whisky barrels to give it a peaty flavor.
It has a graceful taste with a fruity and elegant sweetness, a scent reminiscent of heather honey, and a hint of smokiness. Please give it a try.
