「セントジェームス」は、フランス領マルティニーク島で作られるアグリコールラムです。
1765年のマルティニーク島北部、ペレ山の西側に位置するサンピエールの街でセントジェームスは誕生しました。
当初は軍用病院で薬として使うために造られていましたが、一部を当時イギリス植民地だった北アメリカへ輸出するために、英語圏の人にも聞き馴染みの良い「セントジェームス」という名前がつけられました。
「セントジェームス」とは「聖ヤコブ」を意味しており、当時このラムを作っていたのが修道院だったためであるとされています。
時代が流れて1882年、ポーリン・ランパート氏が権利を購入すると、今と同じ特徴的なスクエアボトルにして正式に商標登録し、ますますその名が世界に広まることになります。
そうして順調に有名になっていきましたが、1902年のペレ山の大噴火に巻き込まれてしまいます。
この噴火はサンピエールの街が丸ごと飲み込まれて廃墟になるほどの悲惨なものでしたが、セントジェームスの施設は奇跡的に一部残っており、比較的すぐに製造を再開することができました。
その後コアントロー社によって買収され、ペレ山の東側にあるサンマリーの地に新たな蒸留所を建てて、今もそこで造られています。
トリロジー 15年は、火山灰による肥沃な土壌で育ったサトウキビを用いたサトウキビジュースをそのまま原酒にし、厳選を重ねたオーク樽で15年間と、ラム酒としては非常に長熟です。

“Saint James” is an agricultural rhum made in the French island of Martinique.
Saint James was born in 1765 in the town of Saint-Pierre, located on the west side of Mount Pelee in the north of Martinique.
It was originally made for use as medicine in military hospitals, but in order to export some of it to North America, which was then a British colony, it was given the name “Saint James”, which is familiar to English-speaking people.
“Saint James” means “Saint Jacob”, and it is said that this is because the rum was made by a monastery at the time.
As time passed, in 1882, Pauline Lampert purchased the rights, made it into the same distinctive square bottle as today, and officially registered it as a trademark, which led to the name spreading further around the world.
It steadily became famous, but in 1902, it was caught up in the great eruption of Mount Pelee.
The eruption was so tragic that the entire city of Saint-Pierre was engulfed and left in ruins, but miraculously, part of the Saint James facility remained, and production was able to resume relatively soon.
It was later acquired by Cointreau, who built a new distillery in Saint-Marie, east of Mont Pelée, where it is still produced today.
Trilogy Aged15 years is made from sugarcane juice grown in fertile soil made from volcanic ash, and is aged for 15 years in carefully selected oak barrels, an extremely long time for a rum.
It has a rich, elegant sweetness with a nutmeg-like aroma, followed by a surprisingly long lingering tannin finish. We recommend you give it a try.
