2014年に第1回を開催し、今では日本を代表するウイスキーのイベントとなった『秩父ウイスキー祭り』。会場には秩父蒸留所のウイスキーだけでなく、全国のクラフト蒸留所が参加しており、中には海外の蒸留所のウイスキーがボトリングされているところもあります。
そして2019年の第6回秩父ウイスキー祭りで発表されたのが『アラン12年 プライベートカスク』です。
スコットランドの西に浮かぶアラン島は、面積約430㎢と種子島と同じくらいの小さな島ですが、かつては密造スコッチ蒸留所が多くひしめき合う地でした。
それが時代と共に数は減り、1830年代には全ての蒸留所が閉鎖し、長らくの間蒸留所が存在しない島となっていました。
1994年、島の北部ロックランザ村にアラン蒸留所が建設され、アラン島での160年ぶりのウイスキー蒸留所が誕生しました。
創設者はハロルド・カリー氏。この方はなんとノルマンディー上陸作戦も経験している元軍人で、退役後はシーグラム社などで活躍し、その後はシーバスブラザーズ社で取締役を任されていたウイスキー業界の立役者です。
ハロルド氏がアラン蒸留所を建設した時、すでに年齢は70歳でした。
長年の夢だった自分自身の蒸留所を持つということを、息子の助けもあって、当時では珍しい今で言うところのクラウドファンディングのような方法で実現させました。
現在では島の南部に第2蒸留所であるラグ蒸留所が建設され、それに合わせて名前もアラン蒸留所からロックランザ蒸留所へと変更されています。

The Chichibu Whisky Festival, which was first held in 2014, has become one of Japan’s leading whisky events. Not only Chichibu Distillery whisky, but also craft distilleries from all over Japan participate in the festival, some of which bottle whisky from overseas distilleries.
And the “Arran 12 Year Private Cask” was announced at the 6th Chichibu Whisky Festival in 2019.
The Isle of Arran, which lies to the west of Scotland, is a small island with an area of about 430 km2, about the same size as Tanegashima, but it was once a place where many illegal Scotch distilleries were crowded together.
The number of distilleries decreased over time, and in the 1830s all the distilleries closed, leaving the island without a distillery for a long time.
In 1994, the Arran Distillery was built in the village of Lochranza in the northern part of the island, marking the first whisky distillery on the Isle of Arran in 160 years.
The founder was Harold Currie. This man is a former soldier who experienced the Normandy landings. After retiring from the military, he worked for Seagram’s and other companies, and later became a director at Chivas Brothers, making him a key figure in the whiskey industry.
When Harold built the Arran Distillery, he was already 70 years old.
With the help of his son, he realized his long-held dream of having his own distillery, using a method that was rare at the time, similar to crowdfunding.
Currently, a second distillery, the Rag Distillery, is being built in the southern part of the island, and the name has been changed from Arran Distillery to Lochranza Distillery.
The extremely rare “Arran Malt 12 Year” is released in a limited edition of 305 bottles from the private cask of the Chichibu Whisky Festival Executive Committee.
This is a bottle that firmly inherits the house style of the Arran Distillery, aged in sherry hogshead casks, and has a finish that gives you a taste of honey, toast, and raisins.
