『モンテクリスト』は1935年にアロンソ・メネンデス氏によってH.アップマン工場で生み出されたシガーブランドです。
その名前はアレクサンドル・デュマ著の『モンテクリスト伯』から付けられました。
キューバの葉巻工場では巻き職人たちが退屈しないよう小説や新聞を読み聞かせるレクトールと呼ばれる役職があり、『モンテクリスト伯』は特に巻き職人たちからの人気が高かったそうです。
『ロメオ・イ・フリエタ』が販売数ランキング1位を取るまでは、この『モンテクリスト』が1位だったほどの人気ブランド。チェ・ゲバラが好んだブランドであるということも有名です。
『モンテクリストNo.2』は1960年代から生産されているナンバリングシリーズで、『モンテクリスト』の中でも特に人気のあるヴィトラです。
特徴的な尖ったヘッドの形状は、ピラミデやトルペドと呼ばれており、巻く難易度も高いことから熟練のトルセドールにしか巻く事が許されていません。
となると必然的に巻きの質も比較的良い傾向にあるのも人気の理由かもしれません。

“Montecristo” is a cigar brand created by Alonso Menendez at the H. Upmann factory in 1935.
The name was taken from “The Count of Montecristo” by Alexandre Dumas.
In Cuban cigar factories, there is a position called a “lector” who reads novels and newspapers to the rollers so that they don’t get bored, and “The Count of Montecristo” was especially popular among the rollers.
Until “Romeo y Julieta” took the top spot in the sales ranking, this “Montecristo” was such a popular brand. It is also famous that it was a favorite brand of Che Guevara.
“Montecristo No.2” is a numbered series that has been produced since the 1960s, and is one of the most popular vitolas among “Montecristo”.
The distinctive pointed head shape is called piramides or torpedo, and only experienced torcedor are allowed to roll it because it is difficult to roll.
This may be why it’s so popular, as the quality of the rolls tends to be relatively good.
