Aiguilles Abbey in Provence, France, is a historic monastery with records of having started making herbal liqueurs as far back as 1239.
From a Japanese perspective, this may seem odd, as it sounds like alcohol is being made at a temple or shrine. However, it was not unusual for monasteries to make alcohol in those days, and at the time, beer was often made as a substitute for drinking water, and herbal liqueurs were often made as medicine.
Aiguilles Abbey was no exception, making liqueurs made from fruits and herbs.
Aiguilles Abbey’s liqueurs were popular, but in the 1980s, the monastery went bankrupt.
Aiguilles Abbey received a large order for liqueurs from a certain company and invested heavily in transportation facilities to fulfill the order, but the company that placed the order went bankrupt, and Aiguilles Abbey went bankrupt as it was unable to recover its investment.
It was later rebuilt as the Aiguebelle Company by a private company that highly valued the Abbey’s excellent brewing techniques, but since it was no longer a monastery, the original name “Aiguebelle” derived from the saint could not be used, so they changed the name to “Eyguebelle” and continue to produce alcoholic beverages such as gin and liqueurs.
At our bar, you can drink Aiguebelle peach liqueur from the monastery days.
It is made by soaking high-quality peaches that have been awarded the A.O.C. designation in highly pure spirits that have been distilled five times. It has a very gorgeous aroma of the original peach flavor and a soft, rich sweetness.
It is an old Aiguebelle liqueur that is hard to find these days. Please enjoy its taste straight.
